A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is a type of electrical outlet that is designed to protect people from electrical shock and electrocution. It works by sensing any electrical imbalance caused by a ground fault, and then quickly shutting off the power to the outlet.

A ground fault occurs when electricity is flowing along an unintended path, such as through a person's body or through water that has come into contact with an electrical appliance. This can be dangerous, as it can cause serious injury or even death.

GFCI outlets are typically used in areas where there is a greater risk of electrical shock, such as in bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas. They are easily recognizable by the "test" and "reset" buttons on the front of the outlet, which allow you to check that the GFCI is working properly and reset it if necessary.

It's important to note that a GFCI outlet should not be used as a substitute for proper grounding of electrical appliances and equipment. Additionally, GFCI outlets should be tested regularly to ensure that they are working properly and providing adequate protection.
